Our Vision

The Philomathia Foundation’s vision is to seek innovative means to promote the betterment of humankind through a commitment to education and research.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote human harmony and wellbeing through advocacy for, and support of, education and research – in particular, the exploration of new ideas in science, technology, the humanities and philosophy.

Established in 2004 by the Chung brothers, the Philomathia Foundation is a private charitable organization that is registered in both Canada and Hong Kong. Supporting innovative, forward-thinking individuals and ideas, we partner with leading research universities around the world to provide seed funding, scholarships and fellowships to undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students and faculty. Our partner institutions currently include the University of California (Berkeley), the University of Cambridge, McMaster University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The Philomathia Foundation’s work is driven by the belief that knowledge should be used creatively to solve global challenges across all disciplines and cultures. We particularly focus on supporting science and research in the areas of alternative and renewable energy, climate change and water research, and the humanities and philosophy – providing funding to researchers in disciplines such as environmental science, chemistry, genetics and genomics, public health, biotechnology, civil engineering, microbiology, health science, human values and intergenerational justice.

Through our work, we strive to promote the exchange of new ideas, technologies and solutions among scientists, researchers and scholars – creating new pathways for those ideas to enter the global arena and have a lasting impact on the human condition.
